the us mint... you don't say

To Our Valued Customers:

Unfortunately, the United States Mint Web site did not perform as expected when the popular 2009 Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set went on sale at noon Eastern Time on October 15. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration many of you may have experienced while attempting to purchase this and other products using our online catalog.

We did not meet the standards of excellence we have set for serving our customers. You deserve a better online shopping experience, and we are committed to resolving these issues quickly and permanently.

Thank you for your patience and continued support.

The Mint is, after all, a Goobermint agency. They meet their "standards of excellence" as well as the Post Office.does.:thumb.aspx:

Their web site sucks. I remember staring at my frozen browser screen when those UHR coins went on sale. I could have taken a nap before the darned thing finally started processing my order. Love the coin, hate their web site.

I have never ordered from the U.S. Mint but any U.S. gov't agency is IMO slow and has poor service. Once more people become aware of gold and silver, then the U.S. Mint website would probably not survive the rush of more people buying gold and silver. As a result, the U.S. Mint's "standard of excellence" will decline even further IMO.

I am amused when I hear these statements. All they are, are "lip service". No mention of how the issue will be resolved is provided, just "we're sorry". Talk is cheap.

I am reminded of a conversation I had with a telephone representative of my local telephone company. After I stated my problem, she said "We're sorry you had this problem". I said "that's fine, but what are you going to do about it so that it doesn't continue to happen"? Silence was the reply. I asked again, still silence came thorough the telephone receiver. Apparently they are taught what to say to that except, "we're sorry".

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE!!!!

I just received this in my e-mail from the U.S. Mint, by Mr. Mory himself!

Dear hydro;

We did not meet the standards of excellence we have set for serving our customers. You deserve a better online shopping experience, and we are committed to resolving these issues quickly and permanently.

So instead of focusing on fixing our lack of performance and raising the customer service bar, we have decided that the following will fix our problems:

The United States Mint will not offer the following products in 2009: the one-ounce American Eagle Silver Proof Coin; the one-ounce American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin; the American Eagle Gold Proof Coins (all weights, as well as the four-coin set); the one-ounce American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coin; the United States Mint Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin SetTM, which also includes a one-ounce American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin; and the American Eagle Platinum Bullion Coins.

Thats right, why fix our production and service problems when we can just not produce. No product, no problems.

Dont get me wrong, we appreciate your past business and want to offer you the following offer for free. Take your paper dollar bill to any Wal-Mart store in the U.S. and they will exchange it, free of charge, for a gold dollar coin. Thats right, a free exchange for a Presidential (or Native American) gold dollar of their choice. Who knows, it may even have my fingerprint on it. Why carry a paper dollar when you can have a special mixture of copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel.

Thank you for your past purchases.

Love,

Edmund C. Mory
Director of the United States Mint

p.s., please pass this offer on to all of my friends at GIM!

Many tried with the UHR... it didn't work.
The only way I see breaking the 'limit per house' is to have separate accounts using separate shipping addresses and CCs.

Don't know if it will work but this is the only thing the mint seems to do well.

Yeah, I got confused with the other posters saying they ordered such and such quantity etc.
I figured the shopping cart wouldn't let me checkout if I was doing something wrong...simlly me!

Update from CoinNews.net:

The United States Mint today said the 2009 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin will launch on Thursday, October 29, at noon Eastern Time.

The release date is not surprising since it was tentatively announced earlier this month. What is nearly shocking is that there will be "no mintage or household order limit for this product."

Re: the us mint... you don't say

The best way to improve service is to stop offering products that are demanded. Very typical of the government, their mandate is to provide and if there are too many complaints, they just stop providing and tell you too bad.

There is no way a private company would ever do the same. Companies who sell items that are in high demand don't fix their problems by stopping sales, they hire more people and work around the clock to upgrade their capacity. Sales is everything, that's the last option, not the first. Outrageous that the US Mint is willingly turning away customers and abandoning production of goods that people want and can generate a hefty profit for the government. Of course when profits and losses don't matter, incentives get blurred. These bureaucrats only have the incentive to make their lives easier. Too many customers would be a dream for a private company. But for the government, it is unwanted because it would force employees to work harder. The solution then is to stop offering services, the government employee can't be inconvenienced by having to work, I'm sure there are many internal complaints by workers saying that having to work all day is not what they expected when they applied for the job position.
